Full Interview Transcription

Steven:

Hello and welcome I'm Steven. And today I'm here with Wei Hunter, the CEO and founder of ClasShare. Wei, how are you? It's good to have you on.

Wei Hunter:

Hi. How are you? I'm good.

Steven:

Great. Yeah, I'm good as well. And I have a couple of questions about your company and what's going on with it right now. But, could you tell us a little bit about yourself and what led you to become the founder of ClasShare?

Wei Hunter:

Yeah. I'm a serial entrepreneur. I founded five companies before.

Steven:

Wow!

Wei Hunter:

Mostly in China. I was in a fashion industry for over 20 years, and my business was mostly in China before. So when 2017, I closed all the business in China, because of the Cold War. It became very hard to do the international trading. So, I decided to pursue my MBA at NYU. So, it took me two years. I graduated in July 2020. And before that, I already spent a lot of time, did some research in the education industry. And I decided to found ClasShare as soon as I finished the MBA. Yeah, that's was during the pandemic. I have a son who ... He's 10 right now. And during the pandemic, I had to search online all the online classes for him to take, so he didn't get bored at home. Yeah. And I find, yeah, there are not many classes that are good quality and consistent in long term. So, I think this will be a great opportunity for me to start something that I think will definitely help the kids' future.

Steven:

Absolutely. So, can you tell us a little bit more about what ClasShare actually does [crosstalk 00:02:09]

Wei Hunter:

Yeah. We are a B2C company. So, we are directed to consumers and we teach kids through online, small class, small group of classes. So, each class is maximum eight students and we have instructor. And each class is 15 minutes. We provide acting, improv, communications program. And leadership, and entrepreneurship and influencers. So, that's what we do. And in the future, I plan to teach them them how to branding, how to establish a brand, how to start a company, how to do the digital marketing. All those kind of skills. I think it's essential for this new world.

Steven:

What age range of students are we talking? I mean, are we talking mostly about people your son's age or that demographic?

Wei Hunter:

Yeah. Our age is from eight. Minimum is eight to 15, right now.

Steven:

Okay. Cool.

Wei Hunter:

Yeah.

Steven:

Yeah. I'm curious if you could just explain what the process looks like from the student's perspective, or maybe the perspective of their parents. What might they be looking for? And how can they get started and find classes with ClasShare?

Wei Hunter:

Yeah. As you see in our website, we have developed 24 courses. So, each course is five weeks. And, right now, we only take subscriptions. That means our class are cohort based. So, we need to meet the students first, to see where they are, what's the [inaudible 00:04:03] what's the interest? Then, we put the similar group, age group and similar interest group together as a group. So, as a cohort. And yeah, they can choose. They want to do acting or they want to try improv. Or they can try different classes until maybe they figure out what they really like. And we can also suggest what's the best for them, according to their potential. So, that's how it works.

Steven:

As you said, during the pandemic, online learning has obviously exploded. Can you describe the competition in this market? And what sets your company apart?

Wei Hunter:

Yeah. Our main competitions, I think is our marketplaces. Like out school and varsity tutor. Those companies, they are like marketplace. They have tens of thousands of classes online. And that was my experiences, actually, before I founded my company. During the pandemic, I signed up classes there, but it took me maybe two hours a day to just search for classes. And they're all short term. So, that's why my company ... What's the difference is, we are B2C. That means we develop our own curriculum. It's a long-term curriculum. So the students can learn with us for four years or five years, or even long, until they go to the college. And, that's my main difference.

Wei Hunter:

And also, we are not only just educating. We also provide a platform for our students to showcase their talents. That's why we have our YouTube channel. We have created many videos about the students, about the class, about improv show and commercials, spokesmen. So, yeah. So, no other companies are doing this. We are the only one.

Steven:

Okay. That's really interesting. And, that's one thing I wanted to ask. What are some success stories of clients you've had? Yeah. Can you tell me about some of your students and what they've been able to do through this platform?

Wei Hunter:

Yeah, we have since our acting program for beginners ... so, usually, for the kids who wanted to do acting, but never done that before. Or for them to, wants to explore if they like it or not. Some students, they came here and they don't know anything and we help them to build their profile and teach them how to reach out to the casting directors, how to find the job opportunities. We have many students, actually, they all got into movies, short films, commercials. That's what we do.

Steven:

What have you heard from either parents or from students themselves, who have used this platform? What are they saying about ClasShare?

Wei Hunter:

Well, we have very good, positive feedback from either parents and students. My parents told me, "Oh, my kid love your class," and have fun. Even some parents don't even want to pay, but their kids have to pressure them. They say, "Well, you have to pay. Yeah. I have fun. I have so much fun." So, they're expecting to join our class every week. And I think that's very encouraging for me. And, also the parents, they can see the progress, how much their kids have improved and how much they have learned. And they all told me they really appreciate what I have done. And yeah, I think that's the thing most encouraged me.

Steven:

Absolutely. And I mean, it sounds like you have some very good word-of-mouth going. But, I'm curious, what was your approach to marketing as you started this company? And how has Paul Kleen and WeAdvertiseYourBusiness, how have they helped you with that?

Wei Hunter:

Yeah. Actually, because this is my first internet-based company that I ever founded ... Before, all my companies ... Five companies before, they are very traditional. So, how do you say, the marketing definitely very different from digital marketing to traditional marketing. Right?

Steven:

Right.

Wei Hunter:

So, yeah. But for me, I even didn't use Instagram or Facebook or YouTube before. I didn't even use those. But, I begin to learn after I founded this company from the scratch. And I realized how important it is for anyone who start a business, internet-based, how important the digital marketing is. And, I didn't have much luck. Last year, I hired four different agencies and they all took the money, spend my money and there are no results. So, so far, actually, our growth is organic, from people know us, who see our YouTube channel, to see Google. Yeah. So far, I think he's different than most agencies. Yeah. He's used HubSpot. I think that's the most usable tool, so far. And I hope he can really help us.

Steven:

Can you explain what that tool is and how it has helped you, specifically?

Wei Hunter:

Yeah. HubSpot they can build a landing page. So, we used to use click funnels and he'd suggest use HubSpot, because HubSpot can track all the traffic to the website. And we can book a call and the can automatically send emails out and they have very strong CRM tool. And we can contact our clients or potential clients very easily through the whole platform. Yeah. Although it's pricey, but I think in the long term it's worth it.

Steven:

Yeah. Okay, cool. It's good to hear. Well, yeah. I mean, what are we talking here? It's March of 2022. What is in store for your company this year? What are you guys excited about right now?

Wei Hunter:

Yeah. We are on the process of get funding raised. Yeah. Our company's been running for over a year and we got a lot of attractions from VCs, angels and accelerators, that all invited me to apply, especially in March. It seems it's the business month. So I've been excited to reach out to the investors and hopefully we can get funded soon.

Steven:

Yeah. That's very exciting. And just to wrap up here, what is on the horizon longer term? Maybe in a couple of years down the roads, where do you see your company? What areas of growth are you excited about?

Wei Hunter:

So, I just moved my company and myself to Atlanta from North Carolina. I think that's a big, big move for us, because Atlanta is a place for the film industry. We want to make more films, make commercials and we, in the two years, and one to two years from now, I can see my company become MCN. That means we want to incubate influencers and we want to provide job opportunities for our students. And we can reach out to enterprise, they can sponsor us and ... Or, they can pay us to marketing their products. That's where we're going.

Steven:

All right. Well, yeah. That's very exciting. Thank you for coming on and answering all these questions. My last question is just, how can people find out more, if they're interested in learning more about ClasShare?

Wei Hunter:

They cab visit our website classhare.com. Or they can take a look our YouTube channel. I think that's the best way to know all about our classes, what they teach, what the students look like and ... Yeah, our YouTube channel.

Steven:

All right. Great. Well, Wei, thank you so much. It's been lovely speaking with you and it's been great learning about ClasShare.

Wei Hunter:

Thank you.
